Whale of a tail!
After the horseback ride we grabbed lunch and headed to the marina. There we metup with the crew of the Pacific Whale Foundation‘s Odyssey of the sea. We headed out for a two hour tour in hope of seeing the humpback whales that migrate from Alaska every year to give birth and mate. It’s still early in the season so there was a decent chance that we could get stumped and not see any whales but luck was on our side and we had amazing sightings. At one time there were five whales altogether in what they call a “competition pod” fighting for dominance. Not too far away from those five were two younger, smaller whales that probably didn’t want to get into the fight with the big boys. It was pretty crazy for a while as they jumped on each other, rubbed barnacles, and smacked tails. The boat we were on was supposed to stay a 100 yards away from the whales but at one point they turned toward us while we were idling and they just had to shutdown the engines and wait for them to pass. They got pretty close but stayed far enough underwater I couldn’t get a a shot of them. We all had a great time seeing the whales. I can’t imagine what it must be like when there are 2000 of them in the area during February.
Here’s the pics!
That's why they call them humpbacks!
Breaching!
