Add High Speed Sync – The radio trigger race is getting hot

0

The guys over at Radio Popper have upped the ante – again.  High speed sync on pretty much every strobe out there!  This is a quote from the Radio Popper blog:  “…the new JrX Receiver (both versions) when activated by a PX Transmitter attached to any Master device on a Canon or Nikon camera, will activate the lighting device so the exposure is proper using high speed sync all the way up to 1/8000 with no hint of a shutter in the image.”

High speed sync at 1/1000 using a Nikon D50

That’s crazy good news.  The JrX is the cheaper, non-TTL little brother ($59 basic receiver)  of the PX system so you’ll be able to do this reliably at long distance and mix together TTL and non-TTL strobes all together and shoot up to 1/8000!  High speed sync makes for a great look.  It gives you the ability to make some great pictures in bright sunlight when you want to kill the ambient with strobe.

This image was made using high speed sync at 1/1000 and two Nikon SB flashes in the midday sun.  I used a different method though because I don’t have the new generation of radio triggers (yet) – I exploited the electronic shutter capability of the Nikon D50.

What’s really cool about this older Nikon D50 6MP camera is that the shutter isn’t all that fast so the camera will just shutdown the sensor at high speeds.  That keeps the shutter out of the calculation so timing is easy.  That makes for a very cool effect.  The D300 will only sync to 250 unless you have one of the new Radio Popper or PocketWizard options.

Take time to check out the video from Radio Popper showing the high speed sync on an Alien Bee at 1/8000.  The video is kinda goofy but you get the info.  Now all they guys at Radio Popper have to do is actually deliver these JrX’s (and maybe get at the same price point as the PocketWizard TTL triggers).

The competition is making this interesting!
