Our Friday Night Lights

2

FNL setup

Here is one more from the senior soccer player shoot.  One of our goals was to shoot a cover for the Senior Night program.  The idea from the program publisher was to recreate the scene from the show Friday Night Lights poster with the players walking onto the field with the stadium lights.  The thing was that the poster had only three players and I had twelve.  I also only had a couple of speed lights and I was using them in the late afternoon.   Keep in mind the goal was to create the look of a “Friday Night Lights” movie poster.  That meant I had to work the ambient light with shutter speed and shut it down as best as I could.  Then I need to bring up the team so they were exposed properly.

The setup for the shot had the 12 girls holding hands in the middle of the field walking away from the scoreboard and the goal.  I cross lit them with the two SBs – man I would have liked to have had more power but I don’t have any portable power form the Alien Bees yet.

Here is the setup shot.

FNL setup

We took several different perspectives both from the ground and from a ladder but the lower angle proved to be the best.   Then everyone turned around and we took the walking away shot.  Turns out they changed positions when I wasn’t looking but it didn’t really matter in the end.

The image was processed primarily in Adobe Lightroom to do the B/W conversion and to add some gradient in the front and I also added some vignette to increase the nighttime effect.

The artist who does the programs added in the stadium lights and the text.  The result was the front and back covers of the program.  These are just scans of them but the actual printed cover was really sweet.

Cool, Tom. Good project and good execution, (not sure about the tower lights but it’s a tie-in to the poster) The girls are evenly lit, even some shadows, tough considering it’s only SBs. The setup diagram was a help too. But if someone wanted to try to duplicate this, can you explain what your exposure planning process was? Strictly manual, TTL, eh, what?

  2. Friday Night Lights has been my nightime favorite show.::~
