I used the Paul C. Buff strip boxes – FSB1036 Foldable Stripbox (10″ x 36″). There is an optional grid for each that was also used.

I’m sure you can get similar results with the small grids. The strip box will just let you paint the subject over a much higher broader area.

What kind of gridded strip boxes did you use? I’d like to try this out; wonder if I could do a DIY strip box.

I’ve got SB800s and an AB800.

I have the inexpensive grids you just gaffer tape to your speedlights; may try that by itself or wrapped with black foam sheets.
