The second setup for the Strobist Sports Portrait shoot was a one light setup outside. I used the same White Lightning 1600 with the 7″ 20 degree grid outside in the beautiful clear day. It was bright out there! The plan for this shot was to “over power the sun”. That big ass White Lightning strobe with a pretty dang tight grid allows me to shoot a small enough aperture and fast shutter to squeeze out most of the sun light especially when I found just a little bit of shade for us to work in.
The second shot is a simple one light setup on a light stand with the light about 8 feet up. The sun was behind the subject and but he was in a bit of shade. Camera setting were F14, 250 and 50mm. The strobe was about 1/2 power. We could have pushed the aperture even further with more power from the light.
The second shot was pretty much the same except the light was at eye level and we added a spritz bottle of “sweat” to recreate the look of action! Shade was provided by the fence. This turned out to be one of my faves of the day!
Again, don’t forget to check out Red Door Photography and I’d like to give one more thanks to the guys there and all the folks who participated in the shoot.
Take a moment and check out this Flickr link for more shots from all the wonderful photographers in Ohio. I think you’ll agree there are some very accomplished photographers in Ohio. I should also take a moment to thank David Hobby a.k.a. the Strobist for his vision and for being the power behind such a wonderful community.
You get a lot of respect from me for writing these hlpfuel articles.
