Edgy Sports Portrait with HDR

One of my favorite photographers work to follow is Joel Grimes.  Joels is pretty famous for his “three point lighting” setup of models, athletes, musicians, or other characters mixed with a HDR background.  I really enjoy the look of Joels three point lighting work because it is different than most and because for me, it really pops.  Not to say he doesn’t have a huge body of outstanding work beyond this style, he does.  I just really enjoy his three point lighting style.

Joel is very open about how his shooting and processing.  He has posted several video and written articles about his work.  One of these days I’ll plan to get to one of his workshops and understand the details of his work.

The following shot is the result of my attempt to figure out what Joel is doing.

The image above is a composit of these two pictures:

The first image is a studio shot described in THIS POST (including a lighting diagram) and processed in Lightroom.  The second image of the building is a HDR processed in Photomatix and in Lightroom.  They were combined in Photoshop.

I’d like to know what you think and be sure to visit Joel Grime’s website for more of the style I’m trying to emulate.

I think you’ve got pretty darn close to Joel Grimes’ style. The photo is very cool, I’ll have to give this a go.

Out of interest; up close, is there a noticeable texture/noise difference between the subject and the background?
